Books

Dune
On the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the galaxy’s most valuable substance, young Paul Atreides is thrust into a brutal struggle for power after his noble family is betrayed. Equal parts political thriller, ecological parable and messianic epic — the book that effectively invented modern science-fiction world-building.

Hogfather
Discworld’s equivalent of Father Christmas has mysteriously vanished the night before Hogswatch, so Death himself steps in to deliver the presents while his granddaughter Susan investigates who wants the Hogfather gone. Dark, funny, and surprisingly moving on why humans need comforting lies before they can handle the harder truths.

Neuromancer
Case was the best data thief in the business, until he crossed the wrong people and lost his ability to jack into cyberspace. Offered a cure in exchange for one last job, he’s drawn into a conspiracy involving a mysterious AI. The novel that coined “cyberspace” and set the template for an entire genre.

The Hot Zone
A true account of the Ebola and Marburg filoviruses, built around a 1989 incident where an Ebola-like strain surfaced just outside Washington, D.C. Reads like a thriller, following the scientists racing to contain an outbreak that could have been catastrophic.

Carrion Comfort
A small group of elderly, immensely powerful psychics have spent decades treating humanity as their personal chessboard, triggering wars and atrocities for sport. One of horror fiction’s most ambitious conspiracy epics, tying its fictional monsters directly into real 20th-century horrors.

Around the World in Eighty Days
Phileas Fogg wagers his entire fortune that he can circle the globe in eighty days, a seemingly impossible feat in 1872, and sets off with his resourceful valet Passepartout. Verne’s most purely fun adventure, still breezy a century and a half later.
Comics

The Sandman: Endless Nights
Seven standalone stories, one per member of the Endless (Dream, Death, Desire, Despair, Destruction, Delirium and Destiny), each illustrated by a different acclaimed artist. A perfect jumping-on point if you’ve never read Sandman before.

Death: The High Cost of Living
Once every century, Death takes human form for a day to better understand what she takes from people — this time crossing paths with a suicidal teenager, and the two spend the day wandering the city together. A warmer companion to Sandman’s darker moments.
Junji Ito — Museum of Terror (Tomie)
Tomie is a beautiful girl who cannot die — every piece of her that’s destroyed regenerates into a new, identical Tomie, and everyone around her is driven to obsession and murder. One of horror manga’s most iconic recurring characters, from the artist who also created Uzumaki.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Movie
The official comic adaptation of the 1990 live-action film that introduced a generation to Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo on the big screen — Splinter’s origin, the Foot Clan, and April O’Neil’s first on-screen appearance.

The Wheel of Time: New Spring
A prequel to Jordan’s 14-book Wheel of Time saga, following a young Moiraine Damodred and Lan Mandragoran’s first meeting, twenty years before the events of The Eye of the World. The most accessible way into the setting without committing to the full novel series.

Judge Dredd: The Complete Case Files 01
The earliest Judge Dredd strips from 2000 AD, collecting the stories that established Mega-City One and its judge-jury-executioner lawman. Satirical and gleefully violent — the direct source material for two feature films.
